Can You Go God Mode in GTA 5 Online? Options Explained

GTA Online has no official god-mode cheat code or normal setting that makes your character invincible. The familiar GTA V invincibility cheat works in Story Mode, not Online. Passive Mode can protect you from other players in supported free-roam situations, and an Invite Only session can keep random public-lobby players out, but neither gives you unlimited health.

If your real goal is to explore without being repeatedly attacked, there are useful built-in options. If you want the single-player invincibility code, that is covered separately below so you do not waste time trying it in the wrong mode.

What “god mode” means in GTA Online

Players usually use “god mode” to mean that a character takes no damage, even while fighting. That is different from having full armor, recovering health quickly or entering a mode that restricts player-versus-player combat.

Story Mode and Online have different rulesGTA Online has no official god-mode cheat. Its player-protection and session options do not create universal invincibility. GTA V Story Mode has a timed invincibility cheat which does not transfer into Online.Which game mode are you in?GTA OnlineNo official god-mode cheatSession / player protectionGTA V Story ModeTimed invincibility cheatDoes not transfer to Online
A Story Mode code, a Passive Mode setting and an alleged Online exploit are three different things. Check the game mode before following a tutorial.

Online clips described as god mode can involve alleged glitches, cheat software or a situation whose full context is missing. A video does not establish that a method still works on your platform, game edition or current update. It also does not turn that method into an official feature.

I would first identify the problem you are trying to solve. Getting attacked while shopping needs a different response from losing a mission to NPC gunfire. You can avoid much of the first problem through session and interaction settings; the second still requires ordinary combat preparation.

Enable Passive Mode for quieter public free roam

Passive Mode is the built-in option to consider when you want to stay in a shared session without fighting other players. Rockstar describes it as protection from other players that also prevents you from attacking them or using weaponized vehicles.

  1. Open the Player Interaction Menu while in GTA Online free roam.
  2. On PC, use M by default. On PS4 or PS5, hold the touchpad. On Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, hold the View button.
  3. Find the Passive Mode option and enable it when available.
  4. Check the on-screen state and any timer before assuming the change has taken effect.

This is a useful choice for a quiet drive or a break from player combat. It is not a way to keep shooting while becoming immune to retaliation, and it should not be treated as protection from every world hazard or mission threat.

If the option is unavailable, read the message attached to it. Rockstar documents restrictions involving weaponized vehicles and cooldowns after certain actions. Active jobs, events or roles can also affect which protection options are available. Do not mistake an unavailable option in one situation for proof that your installation is broken.

I would leave the restricted activity or vehicle and recheck the menu rather than repeatedly toggling settings. Follow the timer displayed by the current game instead of relying on an old video promising instant activation.

Start an Invite Only session to avoid random attackers

An Invite Only session is often the better fit when you want to keep using weapons, complete supported business activities or explore with selected friends. It changes who can join the session rather than changing your character’s damage rules.

  1. Open the Pause Menu.
  2. Select Online → Find New Session.
  3. Choose Invite Only Session and accept the session-change prompt.
  4. Once loaded, invite only the friends you want to play with.

Rockstar’s update notes confirm that session types can be changed without returning to Story Mode first. If your particular starting screen differs, use the Online menu to locate the session selector rather than following an outdated requirement to leave Online completely.

A private session is not invincibilityAn Invite Only session changes who can join. You and friends you invite can play, while normal world damage and activity rules remain. This is an access-control illustration, not a damage shield.Invite Only changes accessInside your sessionYouInvited friendsWorld dangers remainNo open public matchmaking
Privacy removes the random-public-lobby problem. It does not turn off NPC damage, mission failure or every possible danger.

Business content, including Sell Missions, has been available in private sessions since the Criminal Enterprises update. That does not mean every job or event has identical access or participant requirements. Check the activity you actually want to run before organising a group around it.

My recommendation for someone tired of public-lobby interruptions is to try Invite Only before looking for a damage exploit. You retain normal gameplay while controlling the guest list. NPC enemies, accidents and mission conditions still matter, and inviting someone is not a promise that they cannot disrupt your session.

Choose protection that matches the activity

Try timed invincibilityStory Mode cheatNot available in GTA Online

For mission survival, stock up before starting and learn the current quick-use controls. Rockstar added snack and armor shortcuts while the weapon wheel is open; follow the displayed button prompts for your input device. This avoids relying on a long menu sequence copied from an older guide.

Use cover to break incoming fire, then replenish what you can. Refilling health is not the same as disabling damage: if you remain exposed, the new health can disappear immediately. Likewise, an armored vehicle should be judged by the particular threats it protects against, not treated as a universal invincibility switch.

The real invincibility cheat is for Story Mode

If you meant GTA V’s single-player sandbox, the invincibility cheat is PAINKILLER on PC. Open the cheat console with the tilde key, type the code and press Enter. Alternatively, use the character’s in-game phone and dial 1-999-7246-545-537 on supported PC and console versions.

The effect lasts five minutes. It does not create permanent invincibility or carry into GTA Online. The separate TURTLE cheat refills health and armor; it is not the same effect. The broader Story Mode cheats guide lists the available codes and platform inputs.

Make a manual save before experimenting. Rockstar says saving remains possible with cheats enabled, but achievements are temporarily disabled. Reloading a save or restarting resets cheats. Entering the same code again usually disables it, but Rockstar explicitly notes that this is not guaranteed for every cheat.

If the game denies activation, the current gameplay situation may not permit that cheat. Starting a mission can disable off-mission cheats. I would try the code during ordinary Story Mode free roam rather than assume that it must work inside every scripted mission.

Why a “working god-mode glitch” claim needs checking

A tutorial’s upload date is not enough to establish compatibility. Look for the platform, exact edition, uninterrupted setup and evidence that the footage is actually GTA Online rather than Story Mode or a different server environment. Even a genuine demonstration can become obsolete after an update.

Be especially cautious about treating “undetected” or “no ban” as evidence. Rockstar’s current policy allows suspensions and permanent bans for violations, and character progress, property or inventory may be reset. A video creator cannot guarantee a different outcome for your account.

On PC, Rockstar requires BattlEye during GTA Online play. Its supported Story Mode arrangements are separate; turning off anti-cheat is not an official Online god-mode setting. Our discussion of Rockstar’s PC support explains the distinction between platform support, single-player mods and online restrictions.

I would not buy a mod menu or give someone account access simply to solve a public-lobby problem. Invite Only and Passive Mode directly address that problem without depending on a stranger’s claim about an exploit. Neither requires a supposed activation download.

What to do when another player seems invincible

First separate what you observed from what you can prove. Repeatedly surviving an attack can look suspicious, but a short encounter may omit armor, cover, protection states or network problems. Describe the behaviour rather than assuming you know the exact tool or exploit involved.

If you believe someone is cheating or abusing game features, use GTA Online’s reporting options and select the category that fits the incident. Rockstar accepts reports for cheating or modding, glitching and disruptive gameplay. A useful report identifies the player and the behaviour; it does not need an invented technical explanation.

You do not need to keep fighting to establish a perfect case. Change sessions, use Passive Mode where available or move to an Invite Only session. For normal play, regaining a usable session is more valuable than spending the evening trying to beat an apparently invulnerable opponent.

Frequently asked questions

Does PAINKILLER work in an Invite Only session?

No. Invite Only is still GTA Online. It changes session access, not the game mode or the availability of single-player cheat codes.

Can I use Passive Mode during every mission?

No. Its availability depends on the activity and your current state. It is a free-roam protection option, not a universal mission invincibility setting. Follow the game’s displayed restrictions.

Is TURTLE another invincibility code?

No. It restores health and armor in Story Mode, while PAINKILLER provides timed invincibility. Neither code works in GTA Online, including private sessions.

Use the option that solves your actual problem

For quieter public free roam, check Passive Mode. For controlled company and supported activities, choose Invite Only. For the timed invincibility cheat, switch to Story Mode. Keeping those three choices separate prevents a misleading “GTA 5 Online god mode” tutorial from sending you through steps that cannot deliver the feature it promises.
